Lumb Viaduct

A shortlisted Mid Pennine Arts competition scheme to site a covered viewpoint structure on top of this historic Lancashire railway viaduct. Our intention was to create an arresting, unforgettable vision that drew from its industrial heritage, recalling the carriages that once plied upon it but which are now represented as an installation upon a plinth.

Practically, it will provide a new shelter and amenity for those now using the national cycle and greenway by sustainable means.

As a landmark it could provide a focal point and a base for volunteers associated with the management and refurbishment of the whole area being both something to look towards and to look out from.

The perforate walls with the prospect from the cantilevered structure will allow for precipitate views and make parts of the interior into a ‘viewing station’ overlooking the surrounding landscape.
