The playground was refurbished in consultation with the pupils. Replacing uninspiring grey tarmac, the space was re-structured around two new sustainable timber pavilions, ‘The Clubhouse’ and ‘The Stage’. These are linked by a new brightly coloured fantastic marine landscape painted cost effectively onto the original tarmac.
The ambition was to promote an environment appropriate for ‘dramatic inquiry’, encouraging learning of social skills through storytelling and performance, creating an environment for pupils to act out imagined narratives in imaginary spaces. The structures also provide shelter from the rain and sun and double up as an outdoor teaching area during the summer term.
The project illustrates how at a time of public sector spending cuts it is possible to effect positive and high impact change through small-scale intervention and cost.
